Message from Executive Director, Kimberly King
"I never observed my parents with any great pomp or circumstance approach the act of voting with any great solemnity. It may have been that I was too much of a wayward and melancholy kid to know a serious heart when I saw it. It may have been the disillusionment that settled upon them in the 80’s, but I did not grow up holding the right to vote in reverence. Yet suddenly, when I turned 18, “snap” went some invisible switch, and out of the clear blue sky descended upon me this desperate desire to be heard as a citizen; as a countryman; as someone who was part of the whole.
It’s like that song from Sesame Street,
“I'm the leaves of your tree
The wings of your bee
The hands of your clock
The heel of your sock
Your heart and your soul”
(by Sesame Street)
If any part of the whole is missing, the clock can’t tell time, the bee cannot fly and the will of the democracy wains."
